Brian – Brain Injury
Brain Injury Case Study
Brian is 32 years old and had an acquired brain injury from an auto accident at 8 months of age; consequently he had to have two extremely traumatic brain surgeries that left him blind, deaf and paralyzed on the left side of his body and with a mental capacity of about 10 years old. Through his will to live and young age he regained his hearing and sight within 6 months of the initial injury but has limited peripheral vision in the left eye. The paralysis has given him unsteady gait and through years of physical therapy he’s able to walk and has incredible strength in his right arm. His left arm is paralyzed and he’d had surgeries to extend the tendons to keep the arm relaxed but he’s got very little strength in the arm. It’s almost as if his brain has cancelled out the arm all together so he rarely uses it.
We began laser therapy 2 years ago with Dr. Gair and it only took a couple sessions to begin seeing the benefits of the lasers. Brian has always been mild mannered, polite, and what we call a “yes man”. He never argues with the choices made for him and always agrees with whatever the family is doing, but about 4-5 sessions into lasers treatment that began to change. He started to ask questions, give suggestions on places he wanted to go to or meals he wanted to have. He’s always been capable of holding conversations but now his thought pattern was changing, ideas were getting more complex and he came up with solutions to some of the challenges he’s had in the past all on his own. He began using his left arm, it’s still paralyzed and we know that won’t change but he uses it in ways that he never did before like open a snack bag or juice bottles. He’s making connections and seeing patterns in everyday life that he didn’t before and we can attribute that to laser therapy and dietary changes that Dr. Gair has suggested and implemented. We are continuing with treatment as long as possible to help maintain and improve his cognitive development.
